internet not working

I brought a new house in August, but due to unforseen circunstances, we have only just moved in this weekend.

We have plugged in the router and are not getting any internet. We have been through all the online procedures and followed the instructions from the service centre on the phone, but the internet still is not working and an engineer is scheduled to come out to us as soon as possible (April 16th!!!!!!!).  How ever, i was just on the talk talk sales website to see if there was a better package for us now we have moved in, i selected a package and it did a line check and said that the broadband was too slow to run the TV box and that we would have to upgrade to Fibre.  So I have two questions..

1. Why wasnt i informed I would need fibre when I updated my contract and new address details back in September time.

2. If i get a fibre router will my internet begin to work?
